First things first: my sincere congratulations for my Belgian
friends and colleagues within our awesome Track and Field sport. Belgium had a
mini delegation at the World Indoor Championships in Istanbul (Turkey). With
only 3 athletes, Belgium was able to claim 3 times a 5th place.
Tia Hellebaut - Olympic Champion high jump - did
participate in her first international tournament after she announced her
second comeback. Eline Berings - former European Champion 60m hurdles - was
able to turn around an almost endless story of injuries and a lost pro athlete
contract. Jan Van Den Broeck - a promising 800m runner - ran without fear in
both the heats and the semifinal and qualified himself for the final on Sunday.
On that Sunday in March the Belgian Championships XC were held in
Stene. Abdi Bashir amazed many of us by hitting on the gas multiple times
during the race. He defeted our European Champion XC Atelaw Bekele and 1500m
specialist Jeroen D`Hoedt. Good old Veerle Dejaeghere did safeguard her 4th XC title at the age of 38.
All the mentioned athletes above have one thing in common: they
all train consistently with full dedication to our o so special sport. The
Belgian press – but the Flemish one more specifically – was again negative in
their articles. These kinds of moments should be cherished in order to
advertise ourselves. Many people tend to forget that we are all responsible for
the brand of our sport. Let`s be positive and look forward to an even brighter
future!
Week #10 of 2012 – week #25 since the summer prep started – meant the
end of the winter workout schedule. This final week of the higher mileage that
we adopted this winter covered 118+K (73.65 miles). As of now, the pace of my
recovery and easy runs will be lowered. This means that I will run slower
during the SLOW workouts and faster during my upcoming track sessions. I look
forward to the type of trainings that I used to do a lot.
As of tomorrow, I will be working in San Jose, California during the week. My
team is determined to turn this challenge also into a success. Let`s find out during my
first race (needs to be confirmed). More important is getting out the most of
your workouts every single second.
Enjoy your runs!
Wout
